Captain Kane Williamson's brilliant unbeaten 94, experienced batsman Ross Taylor's 70 and Henry Nicholls's unbeaten 42, helped New Zealand play the day on Saturday on the first day of the first Test match against Pakistan. Till the finish, he scored 222 runs in 87 overs at the loss of three wickets.

Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and decided to field first which proved to be true until the first ten overs when New Zealand opener Tom Latham was dismissed for just four and Tom Blundell returned for just five. New Zealand's first wicket fell to four runs and the second to 13 runs.

Captain Williamson, who came to bat after the openers, continued his tremendous rhythm and led the team with veteran batsman Ross Taylor and the two batsmen had a brilliant 120-run partnership for the third wicket. Left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Afridi bowled brilliantly for Pakistan and took the wickets of both the openers and also took New Zealand's third wicket. Afridi took three wickets for just 55 runs in 20 overs.
