External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Wednesday said that the attack on the Tamil Nadu fishermen was not acceptable and the issue has been taken up with the Sri Lankan government.
Raising the issue missing fishermen in Tamil Nadu during the’ Zero Hour’ in the Upper House , the DMK MP Tiruchi Siva said, "They have been brutally attacked and killed and compelled to give up their profession due to harassment of Sri Lankan Navy”. The Prime Minister should condemn this," he added.
AIADMK Member M Thambidurai also raised the issue and said, “235 fishermen from Tamil Nadu killed by Sri Lankan Navy till now", he said, adding that the issue should be addressed urgently.
The Chairman, meanwhile, observed that this was an ongoing issue. "Successive governments have been doing their best. The problem should be resolved once and for all," he said.
Congress Member Digvijaya Singh raised the issue of FIRs filed against politicians and journalists, citing the example of Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor, journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, Mandeep Punia and Mrinal Pande, against whom FIRs have been lodged under various sections of IPC including the charges of sedition. He also asked Home Minister to withdraw these cases.
BJP Member GVL Narasimha Rao raised issue of attacks on Hindu temples in Andhra Pradesh and said that around 140 such incidents have been noted so far. He appealed to the Union Home Ministry to ask the State government for a report on the issue.
NCP Member Fauzia Khan raised the issue the insufficient number of civil servants in the country as the bureaucrats have been working with huge workload while the Congress Member MP Rajmani Patel said that the farmers have not been not getting the benefits of the PM Fasal Bima Yojana.
