Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden expressed confidence that he would win the presidency as he inched closer to the magic figure of 270 electoral college votes, soon after the tide turned in his favour in the key states, a BBC report said on Saturday.

The Democratic challenger now has 253 of the 270 Electoral College votes needed to clinch the White House under the state-by-state US voting system.

Mr Biden is now leading over his rival President Donald Trump in vote counts in the battlegrounds of Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Arizona.

As the tide turned in Mr Biden's favour in more and more battleground states, he expressed confidence that not only will he win the presidency but will end up getting more than 300 electoral college votes.

Even as the counting of votes continues, the number of corona cases are also increasing by record number for the last few days, and with the economy struggling Mr Biden said Americans had given him a mandate to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, the struggling economy, climate change and systemic racism.

This has been one of the most divisive and probably the most closely contested American presidential election, with the result now poised on a razors edge, even as the counting enters its fifth day, there are still no clear winners being thrown up.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced the officials to tally up record numbers of postal votes which is causing the longest delay in declaring the presidential election result in 20 years.
