A revealing article from ComputerBase has stated that Intel is planning on swinging a massive savings ax across its 9th Gen Skylake-X HEDT lineup. The apparent discounts are close to half price in some cases, which should encourage some enthusiasts into making a purchase. It’s believed Intel will be subsidizing the discounts, something we previously alluded to thanks to an alleged leaked slide, thus preventing general uproar from retailers with considerable Skylake-X inventories.

ComputerBase has attached Euro prices to the Intel Skylake-X HEDT chips, which won’t translate directly into US$ because of regional differences, taxes, etc. However, the current exchange rate does help to demonstrate the magnitude of the cuts that Intel may soon be implementing:

Processor       Release price            Unofficial new price

Core i9-9980XE US$1,979          ~€950 (~US$1,059)

Core i9-9960X         US$1,684           ~€830 (~US$924)

Core i9-9940X          US$1,387           ~€740 (~US$824)

Core i9-9920X          US$1,189           ~€650 (~US$724)

Core i9-9900X          US$989                     -€550 (~US$613)

Core i9-9820X          US$889                    ~€520 (~US$579)

Core i7-9800X          US$589                    ~€360 (~US$400)

The Euro prices include VAT, so the eventual US$ prices could really witness cuts equal to half or more. There are arguably two main reasons for Intel to carry out such a drastic plan. The first one is to make Skylake-X HEDT chips remain attractive to potential buyers while the blue team pushes out the new competitively priced Cascade Lake-X processors. The second reason is because of the continued market share threat coming out of the red corner. AMD has certainly been victorious in its PR campaign for the Ryzen 3000 series, and there’s still the 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X and 3rd Gen Threadrippers getting ready to rattle Intel’s cage even further.
