Former Jansangh MLA Amar Singh Chaudhry passes away at 90

Amar Singh Chaudhry, a veteran Dalit leader and a former Bhartiya Jansangh MLA, died at his Ropri village residence on Wednesday. He was suffering from age-related ailments for long. He was 90.
He was first elected to the Himachal Pradesh Assembly in 1967 after defeating the Congress party stalwart Roop Singh Phool by 3,910 votes and also won the seat in 1977 elections too from Mewa (reserve) seat of the Hamirpur district.
 
In that election, the Jansangh had won seven seats.
 
Prior to joining active politics, he was serving in the revenue department as a senior clerk at the SDM office, Hamirpur.
 
He had also remained as the vice-chairman of the Antayoday Corporation when Shanta Kumar was the chief minister of state.
 
Chaudhry is survived by his wife, one son, and grandchildren.
