HIGHLIGHTS

  1. Samsung announced the new Exynos 990 mobile processor.
  2. Exynos 990 and the 5G Exynos Modem 5123 are based on a 7nm EUV process.
  3. Exynos 990 may power the Galaxy S11 early next year.

Samsung announced the new Exynos 990 mobile processor at its Samsung Tech Day 2019. The new Exynos 990 is expected to power flagship Samsung phones in the near future, perhaps starting with the Galaxy S11 series. Exynos 990 is based on a 7nm EUV process and comes with next-gen 5G Exynos Modem 5123.

Samsung hasn't revealed the exact specifics of the new Exynos 990 chipset, but revealed that it is based on a tri-cluster CPU structure that consists of two powerful custom cores, two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores and four power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores. With this, Samsung is claiming a 20 per cent boost in CPU performance.

Exynos 990 also comes equipped with Arm Mali-G77 GPU based on the new Valhall architecture. Samsung claims a 20 per cent boost in graphics performance or power efficiency compared to its predecessor, which seems to be the Exynos 9820. The SoC will also support up to 120Hz refresh rate, so you may see the next Galaxy flagship with a refresh rate higher than the standard 60Hz.

As expected, the Exynos 990 also comes with a dual-core neural processing unit (NPU) combined with an improved digital signal processor (DSP), allowing the processor to perform over 10 trillion operations per second.

Exynos 990 comes with an Exynos Modem 5123 that is also manufactured on a 7nm EUV process. Samsung says its new modem supports all networks from 5G's sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums to 2G GSM/CDMA.

We will likely see the new Exynos 990 power the Galaxy S11 early next year. Samsung says the new mobile processor and 5G modem will go into mass production by the end of the year.

"Samsung's Exynos 990 and Exynos Modem 5123 are perfectly adapted for high-volume 5G and AI applications, and are designed to help the world's most ambitious enterprises, large and small, achieve their goals of bringing new capabilities to their markets," said Inyup Kang, president of System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics.
