Senior Supreme Court Judge, Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, on Monday sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice of India. He succeeded Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who had recommended Justice Bobde, the second senior-most judge of the apex court, as his successor. 

President, Ram Nath Kovind, administered the oath of the office of CJI to Justice Bobde in a brief ceremony held at the premises of Durbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Apart from delivering decisions in various key cases, Justice Bobde was also the part of the historic Ayodhya case, recently. He took oath in English in the name of God at a brief ceremony held at the Durbar Hall.

As Justice Bobde would retire on April 23, 2021, he will have tenure of over 17 months as the CJI.

Immediately, after taking the oath, Bobde sought the blessings of his mother, who was brought to the president house on a stretcher.

Vice President, M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, former vice president, Hamid Ansari, former, Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and several other dignitaries were also present during the occasion. Besides, several former chief justices of the Supreme Court, including R M Lodha, T S Thakur and J S Kehar, attended the oath ceremony.

Justice Bobde belongs to a family of lawyers from the state of Maharashtra. He is the son of senior advocate, Arvind Shriniwas Bobde.
